In a world of shadows, anything is possible. Except escaping your fate.

Ever since she was a child, Ivy has been gripped by visions of strange realms just beyond her own. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy discovers the truth is far worse—her hallucinations are real, and her sister is trapped in a parallel realm. And the one person who believes her is the dangerously attractive guy who’s bound by an ancient legacy to betray her.

Adrian might have turned his back on those who raised him, but that doesn’t mean he can change his fate…no matter how strong a pull he feels toward Ivy. Together they search for the powerful relic that can save her sister, but Adrian knows what Ivy doesn’t: that every step brings Ivy closer to the truth about her own destiny, and a war that could doom the world. Sooner or later, it will be Ivy on one side and Adrian on the other. And nothing but ashes in between…

As a huge fan of Jeaniene Frost and her Night Huntress series I’m so happy to have read the first book in her new series. And although I didn’t think The Beautiful Ashes was as good as Night Huntress, I’m still glad to have been able to do this.

First of all, I don’t want to linger much on this but you can’t compare Night Huntress to this book. It’s something total different. It has angels, demons, even gargoyles! In fact, vampires don’t even excist in this world. So don’t even start. It’s true that this book definitely wasn’t in the same caliber of Night Huntress but I did like it and I read it insanely fast so that should count for something.

Although there wasn’t much character building, in my opnion, I did like the main character, Ivy. She was witty, funny, willing to do anything to save her sister, including jumping into various demon realms to find a weapon. So asskicking female lead? Check! I also thought the twist of her being the last of this ancient line (you’ll know what I’m talking about when you read it) was pretty original. It surprised me for sure who she’s descendent from.

Of course there can’t be an asskicking female character in a Jeaniene Frost book without a handsome, strong alpha male who’s way older than you might think. That’s where Adrian (god that name… I love it) came in. And oh my goodness, he was so sexy. Yeah, I loved him. He was pretty mysterious too because when I thought I had him figured out, there was a twist that made me think totally different about him. I also liked how not everything about him got revealed all at once but that it was slowly unfolding. Adrian also is descendent from someone you might’ve heard about. Read it if you want to know! 😉

There was also the fact that this book reminded me a whole lot about one of my favorite series. You might know it. The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. The Beautiful Ashes was really like a slightly less awesome version of it.

I think my main reason for not loving the book was the fact that it features angels and demons. I’m always on the fence with books about them, especially angels. I can’t help it. I’m just not a fan of them. But I have to admit that overall, it wasn’t too bad, though I thought the book was a little rushed in some parts.

All in all, The Beautiful Ashes by Jeaniene Frost was well-written, full of action and swoony romance. It’s definitely not as good as Night Huntress was but it’s a different book on its own. The characters were endearing, hilarious and kicked ass. I’m intrigued to learn more about this world!

Quotes:

What do you do when you have a demon staring down an angel while the ashes of dead minions blew between them? You get out of the way, of course.

When he’d held me, I realized there was more between us than legacies and lust. He was what I’d been missing my whole life, and if he felt the same way, I’d be damned if either of us was going to die before we could do something about it.

People not raised by demons would struggle with saying no to all the power, money and supernatural bling that was Adrian’s for the taking.
Like his castle. It could double as an icy version of Hogwarts with its massive size.
