Happy November, everyone! This month I’m taking part in Nonfiction November. My regular blog readers all probably know that I looove nonfiction but it’ll be my first time participarting in this particular event so I’m super excited. I’m also reading only nonfiction in November (or I’ll be trying to at least). Wish me luck!

Week 1 — Your Year in Nonfiction:

Take a look back at your year of nonfiction and reflect on the following questions – What was your favourite nonfiction read of the year? Do you have a particular topic you’ve been attracted to more this year? What nonfiction book have you recommended the most? What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November?

What was your favourite nonfiction read of the year?

We Demand The Right To Vote: The Journey to the 19th Amendment by Meneese Wall — (my review)

This illustrated and highly fascinating nonfiction is about American women’s first civil rights movement known as “Women’s Suffrage” and it was just an amazing read. I’m also pretty sure it’s the only nonfiction that I’ve read this year (so far) that I’ve rated with five stars so that on its own says a lot. I’m so happy and grateful that the author asked me to read and review it.

Do you have a particular topic you’ve been attracted to more this year?

The Minuteman: The Forgotten Legacy of Nat Arno and the Fight Against Newark’s Nazis by Greg Donahue — (my review)
Blood Territory: The Death of Jimmy O’Connell by Mark Whittaker
The Templars: The Rise and Spectacular Fall of God’s Holy Warriors by Dan Jones
The History of Bourbon by Ken Albala

So this is actually kind of hard to answer because all the nonfiction I’ve read this year so far have all been pretty different. I hadn’t realized this until I started checking out all the titles I’ve read this year for this post. But to try and answer it anyway, I guess I’ve been listening to more nonfiction as audiobook than previous years. I know this is not the same as one particular topic but it’s all I have as answer.

What nonfiction book have you recommended the most?

Heroes and Jerks: The Best and Worst Who Ever Lived by Ed Daly — (my review)

This was such a fun, easy to read and super interesting so I can’t help but recommend it. This book has a bunch of top ten lists that go from very early ancient history to modern times listing the heroes and jerks of that time. I’m pretty sure anyone would really enjoy this book. It was also longer than I thought it would be (this is a very good thing!) and it was HILARIOUS.

What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November?

I hope to discover more nonfiction books because I could always use recommendations no matter the topic. But I also hope that the people reading this blog will discover more titles too. And of course to have fun with this event!

Feel free to answer any of the questions in the comments if you want to.

  1. Yay, I’m also participating in non-fiction November but for me it’s more about rediscovering what I love about non-fiction as I have a tendency to buy all the books and then avoid them haha. Definitely with you in regards to listening to non-fiction as audiobooks, I’ve really gotten into that myself this year. A great way to indulge!

Hope you have a great month of reading! 🙂

  2. Nonfiction audiobooks are great! I read a great doctor memoir this year that way. I seem to be drawn to plague stuff and memoirs this year. I’ll have to check that heroes and jerks book. Looks fun!

  3. Heroes and Jerks sounds very interesting – sounds like a great pick-me-up. When I was making my NF list, I also realized that I wasn’t really reading any common topic across the books, but many were graphic memoirs so that was the only connection they had.

  4. Hey Stephanie, looks like you’ve had a great, diverse reading year of non-fiction and Heroes and Jerks sounds brilliant! I really hope you enjoy your first year taking part in Nonfiction November and happy non-fiction reading! ???
