Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

This was a really great read. I actually didn’t expect to finish this book in a little over a day. It’s definitely not the biggest book ever but this sort of thing doesn’t happen very often to me actually.

I absolutely loved Alessandra. I now consider her to be one of my favorite main characters for sure and if you’ve read the synopsis you can already tell she’s not your typical main character either. She is villainous, craves power and will do whatever she has to to obtain it. She has killed before and is planning on killing again after she marries the Shadow King and takes the throne for herself *cue evil laughter*

This all made for a nice change from the heroines who want to save the kingdom or whatever. And I liked this change because it was entertaining as hell. And the Shadow King himself? I wouldn’t call him evil but let’s just say he wasn’t a good man either. And I do love my morally corrupt characters. The romance was just perfect and I shipped these two so hard right from the start.

Another thing that I liked in this book was the humor. Sometimes I caught myself laughing out loud and honestly? I had a hard time putting the book down because of this. It was such a page-turner! Also, there were quite a few twists that practically made me dizzy with the unexpectedness. Loved that.

Overall, The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller was so so so great! I wasn’t entire sure what to expect of this book, to be honest, but I really didn’t expect for it to be as fun as it was. I really enjoyed myself with reading it and what else could I want from a book than that? I just loved it!

  1. This sounds really good!! The fact that both of the main characters aren’t inherently good makes me very intrigued indeed… Thanks for sharing your review! 🙂

  2. Ooh, this book is on my TBR, so good to see you gave this a good rating. I’ve been on the fence about this one because one reviewer said that Shadow King is not believable enough as a villain or tough guy, so all the hoops that the heroine goes through to kill him (at first anyways) does not make sense. Did you think so too?

    • Well, it’s one of those books that I read more for fun than look too deep into it. But the heroine didn’t want to kill him because the Shadow King is a bad guy, just for her own gain if I remember correctly so to me it still made sense.

  3. I like it very much when a main character is not at all stereotype. Brings some pepper and energy to the story and keeps me as a reader interested and turning the pages. Thank you for sharing this review and bringing this novel to my attention.
