From New York Times bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer comes a blockbuster fantasy series about a kingdom divided by corruption, the prince desperately holding it together, and the girl who will risk everything to bring it crashing down.
The kingdom of Kandala is on the brink of disaster. Rifts between sectors have only worsened since a sickness began ravaging the land, and within the Royal Palace, the king holds a tenuous peace with a ruthless hand.
King Harristan was thrust into power after his parents’ shocking assassination, leaving the younger Prince Corrick to take on the brutal role of the King’s Justice. The brothers have learned to react mercilessly to any sign of rebellion–it’s the only way to maintain order when the sickness can strike anywhere, and the only known cure, an elixir made from delicate Moonflower petals, is severely limited.
Out in the Wilds, apothecary apprentice Tessa Cade is tired of seeing her neighbors die, their suffering ignored by the unyielding royals. Every night, she and her best friend Wes risk their lives to steal Moonflower petals and distribute the elixir to those who need it most–but it’s still not enough.
As rumors spread that the cure no longer works and sparks of rebellion begin to flare, a particularly cruel act from the King’s Justice makes Tessa desperate enough to try the impossible: sneaking into the palace. But what she finds upon her arrival makes her wonder if it’s even possible to fix Kandala without destroying it first.
Set in a richly imaginative world with striking similarities to our own, Brigid Kemmerer’s captivating new series is about those with power and those without . . . and what happens when someone is brave enough to imagine a new future.
This is the first in a new fantasy series by Brigid Kemmerer. Brigid has been an auto-buy author of mine since 2012 when I read the first book in her Elemental series. I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time so I’m always excited for her next new book. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
I like the premise of this one! Also, since she is an auto-buy author of yours, I should check her other titles because I have a feeling there might be something else that grabs my attention 😉
I’ve also loved her contemporary YA books, which is so unlike me ?
Ohhh, how cool! I hope you enjoy it when it’s out — that cover is gorgeous BTW!
There’s also a UK cover that’s a bit different but I prefer the US one.
I haven’t read Brigid Kemmerer in awhile – hope you love this one!
What was your last book read by her?
I think it was one of her YA contemporaries!
For some reason I thought this was a sequel, since the title sounds so familiar. But very cool, I love hearing about new series that sound good!
It’s brand new! 😀
I haven’t read a Kemmerer book before so I might add this to my list too!
Excellent, Anika! 😀
That one seems so good!
I love that premise! Right now, I’m a bit stacked out – but I’ve made a note of the author and the series… Thank you for sharing:)).
I keep seeing this book and I am so loving the cover, I haven’t read her books yet but I heard they are pretty good. Thanks for sharing.
I haven’t read any of Brigid Kemmerer’s books yet, but she is an author I really want to try. I hope you love Defy the Night! I love that cover.

I’ll read it – lol!
This book sounds amazing, the cover is beautiful too! I haven’t read any of Brigid Kemmerer books, but I’m intrigued by this x
I’d forgotten all about Brigid Kemmerer (eeps!), but the name sounded familiar, and then I recalled Curse so Dark and Lonely. And why does this remind me of Sleeping Beauty?
Ohhh, I just love that cover! It is so pretty. And the blurb sounds very interesting. I may not be a 100% fan of fantasy but I would like to give this a shot. I hope you enjoy the book when it comes out in September.
Definitely looking forward to this one as well, I love Brigid Kemmerer (I say even though I still haven’t finished her latest series oops)
I had a complicated relationship with her Cursebreakers trilogy but still love her 😛
