Devlin Markham, the notorious “Devil Duke” of Huntington, needs a woman. And not just any woman. If he can’t woo one of the most eccentric bluestockings of the Ton within the month, he can kiss his hard-earned fortune goodbye. But he’s always thought love a wasted emotion and marriage an inconvenience at best. And oddly enough, Lady Sophie Wolcott seems unmoved by his charm…

When Sophie learns her beloved orphanage is in imminent danger, she will do anything to save it. Even marry a ruthless rake who takes what he wants in business and pleasure. A man who’s everything she’s always feared most—but whom she reluctantly begins yearning for.

Then Sophie becomes the target of a killer lurking from the dark shadows of Devlin’s past. And they find not only their lives in jeopardy but their very hearts.

The Devilish Duke was one of the best historical romances I’ve read recently. It had excellent writing, a courageous heroine and a protective hero, a romance that was sweet as well as spicy, a solid plot with a secretive killer that made me guess at who it could be. This was my first book by Maddison Michaels but I’m excited to continue reading her work!

After watching her mother die of a broken heart Lady Sophie Wolcott vowed she would never fall in love with a rake. But now that her orphanage is in danger of being destroyed, she would do anything to save it. Even if it means marrying the Devil Duke aka Devlin Markham, a notorious and scandalous rake. Engaged to be married and on the hunt for a previous orphan’s murderer, they spend more time together and Sophie starts to wonder if there isn’t more to Devil than meets the eye. Maybe he isn’t a rake after all? Are they both willing to admit their feelings before the killer strikes again?

I was so hooked by Sophie and Devlin’s story. I loved how Sophie was able to get through the walls that Devlin had build around his heart when his father died and he had to go live with his awful grandfather. The romance, as I mentioned before, was sweet and with some spicy scenes which were also very well-written.

There was also the big mystery surrounding the killer. Who is he and why does it seem he’s after Devlin, which means that Sophie was in danger as well. I had quite a few suspects on my list and one of them actually turned out to be the killer, which I count as a win because I almost never figure it out. Obviously I’m not saying who it was but I really liked the way this particular plot went because although he was on the list, this person wasn’t my first suspect.

The audiobook was narrated by Justine Eyre. This was also the first time I listened to an audiobook voiced by this narrator. And I must say that I really liked the way she told the story. I really don’t have anything bad to say about Justine, she did a really great job of not only voicing Sophie but also Devlin. I definitely want to listen to more of her work as well!
