Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Bettany Hughes
Expected publication: January 18, 2024 by Weidenfeld & Nicolson

Their names still echo down the ages: The Great Pyramid at Giza. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Temple of Artemis. The statue of Zeus at Olympia. The mausoleum of Halikarnassos. The Colossus at Rhodes. The Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Seven Wonders of the World were staggeringly audacious impositions on our planet. They were also brilliant adventures of the mind, test cases of the reaches of human imagination. Now only the pyramid remains, yet the scale and majesty of these seven wonders still enthral us today.

In a thrilling, colourful narrative enriched with the latest archaeological discoveries, bestselling historian Bettany Hughes walks through the landscapes of both ancient and modern time; on a journey whose purpose is to ask why we wonder, why we create, why we choose to remember the wonder of others. She explores traces of the Wonders themselves, and the traces they have left in history. A majestic work of historical storytelling, The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World reinforces the exciting, and nourishing, notion that humans can make the impossible happen.

I may have squealed out loud when I found out this book is coming out in early 2024. Bettany Hughes’ Venus and Aphrodite is one of my all time favorite nonfiction books so I’m absolutely thrilled to get my hands on another one of hers and The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World sounds really amazing and super fascinating. I can’t wait! 😍

    • I know of most of the wonders but not all in super good detail. I do know that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon may not have excisted so I’m excited to read what Bettany says about it.

It does sound amazing — I genuinely enjoy learning about the seven wonders bc it fascinates me what humanity is capable of (and at other times I just want to cry for humanity, but that’s another story!)

    • It’s also amazing to think about how we still have The Great Pyramid at Giza while the other wonders have been long gone. You know, simple thoughts 😛
