MY YEAR IN NONFICTION
Take a look back at your year of nonfiction and reflect on the following questions
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE NONFICTION READ OF THE YEAR?
Women of Myth: From Deer Woman and Mami Wata to Amaterasu and Athena, Your Guide to the Amazing and Diverse Women from World Mythology by Jenny Williamson and Genn McMenemy — my review
This was by far my favorite nonfiction of the year. Women of Myth is written by Jenny and Genn from one of my favorite podcasts Ancient History Fangirl and illustrated by the amazingly talented Sara Richard. I loved it so so so so much!
DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR TOPIC YOU’VE BEEN ATTRACTED TO MORE THIS YEAR?
Messalina: A Story of Empire, Slander and Adultery by Honor Cargill-Martin — my review
Battle Elephants and Flaming Foxes: Animals in the Roman World by Caroline Freeman-Cuerden — my review
I’ve always been obsessed with ancient history but I feel like this year I’ve read more of the genre, in particular books about ancient Rome. I especially loved Honor Cargill-Martin’s book about Messalina and Caroline Freeman-Cuerden’s books about animals in the roman world. So fascinating!
WHAT NONFICTION BOOK HAVE YOU RECOMMENDED THE MOST?
Spare by Prince Harry
This is probably the book I’ve been recommended the most. I’m just not terribly interested in it, to be honest. But I can always be convinced so if you’ve read it let me know what you think!
WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO GET OUT OF PARTICIPATING IN NONFICTION NOVEMBER?
I feel like my answer is the same each year. I hope to discover more nonfiction books (of course) but also more nonfiction bloggers.

Are you participting in Nonfiction November too?
Have you read any of the books I mentioned?
Women of Myth sounds soo good! I’m not participating in Nonfiction November myself (too big of a mood reader) but I’m looking forward to your posts and recs this month!
I’m a mood reader too but I can usually deal with it for Nonfiction November 😛
I’m looking forward to your reviews this month, especially since I don’t have time to read non fiction, I can live vicariously through your posts😁
I will do my best not to disappoint haha
I wasn’t even sure Nonfiction November was officially happening again, but I’m glad it is! I haven’t read too much nonfiction this year, unfortunately, but I’m hoping to sneak in a couple this month. I too have very little interest in reading Prince Harry’s book!
I feel like I have read less nonfiction than last year so it happens sometimes
I’m a huge mood reader too but luckily there are so many different types of nonfiction books that I can find something to fit my current mood.
So many subgenres to choose from! 😀
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Stephanie. I’ve got out of the habit of reading non-fiction, but really should read more. I love the look of the book about Messalina – especially considering the hatchet job that Robert Graves did regarding her in his Claudius duology! And as for Spare – nope. Not going to get any recommendations from me. I was disgusted by his attitude and behaviour to other members of the Royal Family – especially around the death of his grandmother.
The Messalina book was amaaazing and came as a total surprise to me. I hope the author will write more in the future!
Hope you have lots of great reads for Nonfiction November!
Thank you!!
I am with you there with the Ancient Greeks and Romans. My choices this year, will be Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as Byzantium. Suitable since we are just back from a long trip to Greece, where you really get closer to the Ancient world.
Going to Greece is a dream of mine. Hopefully someday! 😀
Good luck with Nonfiction November! I’m unofficially participating. I’m hoping to read all the nonfiction books left on my shelf. 🙂
Happy reading! 😀
Oh, sounds like you had a good year so far, I am definitely still curious about Women of Myth (and not just for the pretty cover). Good luck with this month! I am not sure if I will participate in Non-Fiction November, I am already reading plenty of NF.
It’s my “excuse” to read only nonfiction this month 🤣
I haven’t read like any non-fiction this year!! I really need to get to some before the year ends.
